Abstract

Da'wah in the pre-digital age looked different than it does now. Preaching in front of a large congregation (majlis ta'lim) was formerly the standard method, but today it has spread into the realm of digital media. Traditional preaching during the walisongo period seems to have used an artistic and cultural approach to spreading Islam. People in the past were classified as regular folks (kejawen) who stuck to their old ways of thinking, hence this was a major focus of the ancient da'wah method. Islamic embellishments on otherwise conventional garments. Wayang, gamelan, tembang, grebeg, and sekaten are all examples of traditional art forms that were used as a form of preaching in the traditional period. Its fast expansion is in stark contrast to the digital age, both in terms of aesthetics and medium. The sermons are better and the preachers put more effort into them. In order to gain favor with the mad'u, many da'i now use the internet in their sermons.
