Abstract

Social-emotional development is a fundamental component of early childhood development, as it plays a crucial role in supporting children's cognitive, language, moral, physical, and school readiness development. This study aims to examine the importance of social-emotional development and its relationship with various aspects of early childhood development through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach. The study employed the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines, which included the processes of identification, screening, selection, and analysis of scientific articles published between 2018 and 2026. The inclusion criteria comprised articles focusing on early childhood social-emotional development, published in scientific journals, and employing empirical research methods, including qualitative, quantitative, mixed-methods, and meta-analysis approaches. A total of 30 eligible articles were analyzed using descriptive and thematic analysis. The findings indicate that social-emotional development is closely associated with children's language, cognitive, character, moral, mental health, and school readiness development. Furthermore, social-emotional development is influenced by several factors, including parenting styles, family environment quality, learning approaches, social interactions, and the use of digital technology. A supportive environment, responsive parenting, and child-centered learning have been shown to optimize social-emotional development while simultaneously promoting other developmental domains. Conversely, inadequate social-emotional stimulation may hinder children's ability to communicate, regulate emotions, interact socially, and engage effectively in learning activities. Therefore, social-emotional development should be prioritized in early childhood education through collaborative efforts among families, schools, and communities to ensure the optimal and sustainable development of all aspects of children's growth.
