The learning process in the scope of Islamic Education (PAI) reveals a gap among students in terms of learning outcomes, particularly in critical thinking. Many students are still reluctant to express their thoughts when asked questions by the teacher. Therefore, the researcher proposes the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model to enhance students' critical thinking at SMP Negeri 9 Kota Metro.
The questions posed in this research are: How is the implementation of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model to enhance students' critical thinking at SMP Negeri 9 Kota Metro? How effective is the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model in improving the critical thinking of students at SMP Negeri 9 Kota Metro? How is the supporting and inhibiting factors in the implementation of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model to enhance students' critical thinking at SMP Negeri 9 Kota Metro.
This study uses the action research design model of Stephen Kemmis and Taggart, comprising 3 cycles. Each cycle consists of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. Data collection tools include observation, tests, and documentation. The tests consist of a pre-test, post-test I, post-test II, and post-test III. Data analysis is conducted using the paired sample t-test.
Problem Based Learning (PBL) is effective in enhancing the critical thinking of students at SMP Negeri 9 Kota Metro. This is evidenced by the significance test results showing a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test I, between post-test I and post-test II. Additionally, there is also a significant difference between post-test II and post-test III. Therefore, it can be concluded that PBL is effective and can be applied in Islamic Education (PAI) to improve student learning outcomes. The use of PBL in PAI encourages students to actively engage in the learning process, enhances their understanding of religious teachings, and broadens their horizons through self-exploration and collaboration with group members.
